Utilitarianism as a tool
In its standard
formulation, utilitarianism is big burden on one's life. It demands to
make all decisions on rational and impartial basis. Utilitarian ideal is
human-robot that doesn't act accordingly to human nature or emotions, but based
on cold, precise calculation of utility.
It is main reason,
why people reject utilitarianism. They are not willing to make huge sacrifices,
they are not comfortable with pressure it entails. It is understandable and still
those people can benefit from utilitarianism. How? Metaphysics
They should treat
utilitarianism as a tool. Easily and directly applicable, to all daily dilemmas
and moral conundrums. So rather than use it actively, to all decisions they
make, they should use it passively – only when it is needed. It probably won’t
be as beneficial to society as active approach, but still much better than
rejecting it whatsoever.
